Teaching Experience

For students interested in obtaining specific training and experiences in the teaching of psychology the Department of Psychology offers Psych 633, Teaching of Psychology. Psych 633 is a prerequisite for students who wish to be the sole instructor of a class. Furthermore, the first time a student teaches a class as a sole instructor they are provided a faculty mentor to provide guidance and mentoring.

Opportunities to teach classes are generally available during the academic year and summer sessions on a competitive basis and the majority of our students (83%) teach an undergraduate class or lab as the sole instructor at some point in their graduate training. Students can also take advantage of training through the ISU Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and the ISU Preparing Future Faculty Program, which also trains and mentors graduate students interested in pursuing careers in higher education. A new certificate in Graduate Student Teaching is also available.
